The Climate: With a New Kind of Surgery, We Might Survive & Thrive
I am a hospital chaplain and educator. For two years, I had the privilege of working full-time in climate change education at the CO2 Foundation (2018–2020). This subject of climate change and end-of-life-care has been on my mind. This morning Medium prompted me to read Eric Demore’s article, “A Palliative Care Approach to the End of the World.” Hats off. Perhaps if you or a family member has faced a life-threatening medical condition, you understand the power of that crisis to sharpen attention and bring a focus on what most deeply matters. Through the fears and pain and sadness there can be found a majestic sort of meaning. At the very least, wrestling with our mortality makes us into wiser and more mature adults, whatever our age.
When it comes to the life-threatening medical condition through which the planet is going, climate change and the crisis of extreme weather, the crisis offers the opportunity for a useful paradigm shift in consciousness.
